Tips for a good mobile ham radio General Class?
Get my general class license next month. He wondered if anyone has any recommendation on a good radio for mobile in my truck. I've been looking at the Yaesu FT-8800 FT-8900. The use of any item and anything you like and why?
I'm primarily an HF operator, so my main platform is an Alinco DX-77T, which is a pretty good radio. I have a Yaesu FT FM 2200 for 2 meters, and I have a Dual-band HT for both 2 and 70 cm. There is a lot of 440 in operation around here, so this is my first venture into UHF, and I'm trying. I looked at the ARRL comment. If you are a member you can get a better angle on the radio you want, the exams are in pdf format that goes back a long way, and arriving until November 2008 (the new QST issue a few days ago arrived in my mailbox one). I can give you an idea of what I read. The dualband 8800 looks like a nice, but the reviewer suggested that take some time to get used to that programming. The instructions call for you to hold down the button for a moment that he was a second or two. When he did, he surpassed the mark he was after. He found that while they saw as a moment, was much smaller. You could get used to He eventually, however. The removable front seems a good option, if you hide the main part of its radio somewhere out of sight of thieves, never a bad idea, especially if you'll be out of the truck for any period of time, and our economic situation, a transceiver would be expensive even if the person did not know what it was, and I would rather lose his head 100.00 remote control of a 400.00 transceiver. The entrance to the tower in a place that was more open into the atmosphere, rather than below the board, might be a good idea. The critic said he ran a little hot, and while the fan runs by a thermostat I would say that more space in the back of the platform, the better. I had only read a few paragraphs in a study for 8900, and again I think. It is a quadband, but the reviewer, who was administrator of the W1AW station and works with a lot of radios, to the right of the box, said he had to read the manual before use. I always do anyway, but I made a sort of suspicion of this. The other thing I noticed was that the platform runs 10 meters FM band in the whole, while that the allocation is only at the top, so you should see the edges of the band with great care. Enjoy the towers, and enjoy the hobby. AB9BD first licensed in 1968 (as WN9AOF).
